My in-laws did this a few years ago for us. They added us to the deeds and kept their names on the deeds. It did not affect the status. We are DVC-Y. All of their contracts were purchased direct but I believe if your parents are currently DVC-Y, if they added your names, you would be DVC-Y as well. I believe the only w

If you don't have enough points to do a completely NEW reservation, then yes, Modifying your current reservation is the way to attempt to get a different resort as the new resort will replace the old resort.
