Universal Epic for the day?
Looking for tips and tricks on doing Universal for the day. I haven't been in 10 or so years and didn't stay on site.
My child really really wants to do Super Mario Bros, I'm looking to get tickets to Epic for the day. No early entry or express, we are on a budget lol.
We always do early entry and LL at WDW so I'm a little nervous we will be disappointed without these. Thoughts?
If we drive from Riviera, what time should we leave the resort to get there for park opening?
Let me know your tips & tricks. Or feel free to share anything else about visiting Universal Epic for the day.
Without early entry, it can be tough. You might want to consider booking a value hotel at Universal, even if you don't stay there so you can get the 1-hour early entry. Depending on your date, you can get a hotel room in a value hotel for a pretty reasonable price. Cheaper than a Disney value resort.
Express Pass isn't absolutely necessary.
If you get the 1-hour early entry, if your son wants to see Super Nintendo World, my recommendation would be to try to rope drop Donkey Kong Mine Cart Madness. This ride ALWAYS has a long line throughout the entire day and it tends to go down often. The ride is all the way at the back of Super Nintendo World, so go do that first and then hop on Mario Kart afterwards.
If you're willing to stay late, the wait times actually tend to drop off a bit at night. Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge can often have a long wait in the morning but in the evenings wait times drop off considerably. Similarly, Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry wait times drop off at night too.
If you want to meet Toothless from How to Train your Dragon, that line can also be very long although Universal has opted to speed things up a bit by only allowing 2 different "poses" per group which cuts down how long each family gets considerably and helps reduce the wait times a bit.
The Park Prodigy on YouTube has some good example strategies for Epic Universe that you can use.
We're planning our Epic Universe day for a June trip, but we'll have Early Entry and here is my current plan:
8am arrival for early entry
9am (Early Entry) - ~30m wait (hopefully) Rope Drop Mine Cart Madness (unless it is down / has a delayed start, sometimes Team Members will tell you if this is the case)
Isle of Berk - ~30m wait - Meet Toothless if line isn't too long
Alternate if Toothless line is long: Hiccup's Wing Gliders (family rollercoaster similar to Slink Dog Dash) (10-15m wait)
Dragon Racer Rally (10-15m wait) if line isn't too long (this one isn't a must do for us - definitely not an E-Ticket attraction)
10am - I assume at this point our hour is over and park is open
If we met Toothless, head to Hiccup's Wing Gliders (30-45m wait)
Grab Lunch 11am - 12pm
At this point, I'd be basing everything off of wait times to see what to do next. Monsters Unchained usually has a very short wait, it isn't because the ride is bad, in fact it is one of the best rides in the park, its just a high capacity ride - so wait until the wait time is 15 mins or less to ride it.
Will probably just have to wait in a 45-60m line for Curse of the Werewolf. Carousel you can do whenever although it is nicer at night (but the line is longer at night). Stardust Racers - if you like rollercoasters usually doesn't have a very long line, 35 mins or less generally, so do this whenever (it can get longer at night though).
During the really hot parts of the day - we'll probably spend time in the 2 shows, Untrainable Dragon and Le Cirque Arcanus.
Maybe do Fyre Drill when its hot out, but you do get soaked - so be ready with ponchos and a change of clothes if you want to ride this.
After dinner, wait times seem to drop considerably - which is when we'll look at riding Battle at the Ministry, Mario Kart and Yoshi's.
There are interactive Super Nintendo World mini-games (which require a $45 Power up band). You can buy them used off of eBay, etc - and you do not need one for every person. You can buy them in the parks and if you have just one, you can still play the minigames together with 1 band including the Bowser Junior "final" minigame. I recommend buying the power up band if your primary reason for going is Super Nintendo World.
In the Wizarding World, you can also buy an interactive wand (V1 or V2 both work, but V2 is more interactive). You can get a V1 want for free if you buy a $300 Universal Merchandise gift card. Something to consider if you think you're going to spend a lot on merchandise anyway. The interactive wands let you cast spells and there are interactive elements in the land.
Almost all rides in Epic Universe require you to use a locker system, meaning you can't ride with a backpack on. Lockers are bigger in Epic Universe than Universal Orlando, but they don't fit huge backpacks. I'd recommend a smaller loungefly sized bag or a sling bag (like this one from Amazon).
You can buy a refillable soda mug that works all around the park for around $18.
There are not that many rides so it is feasible to do them all in 1 day without Express. But Early Entry does help a lot.
Hope this helps!

Hey DVCFace! I help write for TouringPlans blog about Universal and we just published a blog post for this!

As for driving, I'd suggest being at the gates by 8:45am for non-Early Park Admission. Our plan has you visiting SNW later in the day, lunchtime for DK and evening for MK and Yoshi, but if you're child REALLY wants to do SNW I'd say just go there immediatley and stay in the land all day. Buy a Power-Up band and play all the games.
