Small Points Contract - How Much???
Wondering what the group agrees is a small points contract?!?!
When DVC started in '91, new members had to buy 240pts. Since then, new member & resale buy-in has fluctuated. Currently, new members have to purchase 100pts+.
So what do we agree is a small points contract???!!!
Under 150?
Under 100?
Under 50?
DVC DISCUSS!!!
My thoughts would be around 75 points or less would be small. In most cases, 75 points by themselves, would only be good for a 3-5 night stay, so you are going to typically add them to another contract at some point. I know you can stretch the points depending on travel period, and if you can book a value studio, or stay at one of the ocean side resorts. You could also bank/borrow to get yourself to a full week. A 75 point contract is just enough exposure to catch a case of addonitis. :)
A follow up question I would have is, on these small contracts where did the "odd" number of points come from? I will often see contracts with totally random point totals like 42, 47, 56, etc. I'm talking about contract points, not balances from banking and borrowing. Right now there is an Aulani contract for 66 points, that just seems so random.

I know it's somewhat arbitrary, but I guess in my head it's any contract under 100 points.
Happy to call the BoardWalk, Bay Lake Tower, and Grand Floridian home!

My guess is that the random number of points reflect the exact amount needed to stay in a certain season. An example would be purchasing a 36pt contract for 4 nights at OKW in September. I remember Paul & Amy saying tht their Grand Cal was a weird number for this same reason.
Of course, points charts change every year. For example, BWV also used to have 9pt studios in September. But now they are 10pts. I wonder how the members with these type of contracts handle that when it happens? I presume endless borrowing???

Great point! I guess it depends on if you need the 11 month booking advantage or not. I assume most small points contracts are dependent upon it. I know I certainly am!!!

I still need to learn the ins and outs of the one time use points. I did work with a DVC associate last Friday and purchased a couple of points because we were 1 night short of a last minute trip next month with 1 point available. By a stoke of luck I looked and there was the night we needed at a value studio at AKL and I was able to buy the remaining 8 points for about the same price as a night at a All Star resort.

That's a good point. I didn't look at it from that angle. So, if somebody was short 36 points for a trip they would just sell them 36 points. It just seems like multiples of 5 or 10 would make the accounting easier.

The one time use points I am speaking of are limited to 24 points per use year and are only available in the 7-month booking window.

Sorry, that should have been in response to the comment @Sparkle_Steffie made on the selling of the odd number of points.
