Yes! Once you’ve commented on a post it’ll show in your “following” section on the Home Screen and notifications. On the “following” page there will be a dot next to each thread with new posts/replies you haven't read yet

Yeah the light colored text is from a bug where, when posting using dark mode, sometimes it would save the white text color.
