Howw do you know when you have enough? What helped you discover you had too many or two few points? Is there a deal Disney could offer that would make you immediately want to add on direct points over resale?

I've pondered this myself. I think if I ever was worried about losing points, that's too many points. And if I ever get to the point that I'm stressing my annual dues, I probably have too many points.

The limit does not exist! jk. For me, it comes down to dues, and January really makes me reconsider any add-on-itis lol. Even when I'm tempted to add on more points for quick stays as a local, do I really want to pay more annual dues?

As for your last question, pretty much the only deal Disney could offer that would make me want to add on direct over resale (already DVC-Y) would be points for the Yacht Club--a girl can dream.

Happy to call the BoardWalk, Bay Lake Tower, and Grand Floridian home!

You know what would get me to never buy resale again? Direct points can be used at 8 months for non-home resorts. Give me a one month advantage over everyone else please. But that probably isn't legal.

We love the yacht club. We are on a never ending quest to make our house smell like that 24/7.

Always want to add on. Wife and I started with one direct contact. Now up to 4. 3 are resale. With flights being on the higher end adding on is on hold at the moment.

  1. You know you have enough by balancing the following two considerations: first, when you plan out your trips and where you want to stay, do you have enough points to book them? And second, when you look at adding points and paying dues and overall budgeting, do you have enough money and cash flow for adding on? If the second one is a hard no, then you have enough points and possibly too many. If it's a yes, then look at your planned bookings and wishlist. If you want more points AND you're reasonably confident that you'll want those almost every year, then you can look into adding on.

  2. We knew we had too few points when we bought our first resale contract and looked at the points charts at the original 14 resorts. When we planned out hypothetical vacations, it was clear we didn't have enough. We ended up adding on a direct contract to get to an acceptable level, but we still have addonitis because we want two trips next year that we won't have enough points for.

  3. We already bought direct because we wanted blue card benefits, especially the ability to buy Sorcerer's Passes. That alone has already saved us over $3000. If we buy them once more in the next 40 years, it will have been worth it to buy direct vs resale. But now that we are direct members, DVC would have to offer a deal that truly competes with resale pricing, and I don't see that happening in the near future.

Very true. I can't see visiting more than twice per year now, with airfare being what it is. Between Jan 2026 and Jan 2027 we have 4 trips scheduled, and it's been tough! Maybe 3 is the sweet spot for us, but 4 is too much.

When you can no longer afford the annual dues or every time you pay your annual dues you shudder at how expensive they are 🀣

Truthfully, you really need to figure out how often you go to Disney, roughly when and what size room to know how many points you need each year.

In terms of adding on, at this point for me - I have more than enough points but if the right resort came up for sale, like a Yacht Club DVC property or more likely in 2042 when my Beach Club points expire, thats when I'll start looking to buy more.

If they dropped the membership extras amount back down to 25pts, I would buy direct in a heartbeat!!! πŸ€£πŸ˜†πŸ€£

I'm considering a couple of options for my next contract and it's either a small Poly add-on to give me another day there or a small VDH contract to give me some West Coast points. At this time, I'd be okay buying resale for those, even for the limited VDH. However the prices are a bit too high for resale so it almost makes since to buy direct and then not have the limits on where I can use the points. For now, I'm just paused on a getting anything but what Disney could go to flip that switch to purchase is to offer incentives at the lower purchase amounts. Right now you basically get no incentives for anything under 100 points.

For us, it’s more of a question of how much vacation time do I have? We are addicted to one bedrooms,so that factors in as well. We love to stay 8-10 days with the other 4-6 days of my 2 week vacation time in return to reality recovery time πŸ˜‰ If the unforeseen happens and we have to bank, like last year, we add another trip down and hope the vacation calendar at work is generous.

It’s kinda fun to do the impossible. β€” Walt Disney

The availability to use the points and comfortable with paying dues.

Have the desire to visit other parts of the country/world not associated with DVC/Disney..

I'm new to this.... so I had add-on-itis after our first DVC trip. The trip was with friends and not family so NOW I want to have points to do a friends trip as well as having the family trip set aside. Stretch goals? I'd love to stay at the Cabins, the Bungalows, and a month long trip. ;)

We've increased our vacationing budget a good amount in the last couple years but I don't want the entire budget for vacations in Disney properties only. That limits how many points I add...... for now....

I have resisted Addonitis, but I admit there were times I thought I would succumb to that nasty disease (LOL). The closest I came was when Poly Tower was announced and Poly resale, at that time, was like $150 per point. I was 100% sure the Tower would be rolled into the rest of Poly, which I knew would increase the resale cost once it was announced that the Tower was part of the Poly DVC association. However, I resisted the temptation. We have a 200 point contract and, so far, that has been enough. We usually bank some points to the following year, so my wife used that as evidence (along with that Poly point chart...yeesh!) to persuade me to not purchase that resale Poly contract.

In hindsight, I'm glad I didn't buy that Poly contract. We have an upcoming Poly Tower Theme Park view reservation in October, so we can still stay there from time to time without the need to purchase a new contact and be on the hook for more maintenance fees.

I havent hit too many yet. I first bought direct at GFV when they had the fire sale with the plan of banking and borrowing to go every three years since my kids were nearly grown. But they're disney kids (adults now) and dont want to wait three years so we're constantly borrowing.

Also I really like hosting friends and family in 2 bedrooms when we travel together. I want them to understand why I love it do much.

I've added on Poly now with a trip with my sister and her DH in mind but now ive got two more trips planned so its still not enough.

I may just rent a trip or two. (Or maybe add on at SSR to have points for hosting.)

We haven't figured out our "enough" number yet. We bought enough for studio visits and then quickly realized that a 1 bed is going to be next, so we're looking at adding soon.

What would make me buy more direct? A flash sale for VGC with prices near VDH. I wouldn't be able to dial fast enough.

We started adding on when I was getting ready to retire. We always wanted more trips, but work, life, kids, expenses all seemed to get in the way. While I was still working, we started our quest for more points. We now have 1008, split among both coasts. We went by the old adage, buy where you want to stay. SO we ended up with 5 home resorts! 3 in WDW and 2 in DLR. Makes for some very interesting split stays.

I would love to add on more at AKV and VGC, but I would have to sell my VDH first. Dues are the limiting factor. We are just about at the point where I cringe when paying dues.
