Arrival day strategy

Arrival days are becoming exhausting for us, and like many, we try to spend a little time at Disney Springs on arrival day given most of our day is gone by the time we’re on property mid/late afternoon. We don’t do incredibly long stays anymore, maybe 4/5 nights at 1 resort, and so I’ve started tinkering with the idea of having an arrival day resort. Something close to the Springs, if we’re not staying close to the Springs to begin with. This could be at OKW/SSR during a low point season, maybe a cash stay at POR or at a springs neighbor hotel, or an any value resort. I really just don’t like the idea of dropping 20 points on a night that I’m just going to hit the bed from an exhausting day of travel.

Just curious if anyone else does something similar to avoid wasting points on their first day? If so, or even if not, what have you found to be your favorite arrival day strategy or tradition?

yeah yeah, that’s great, but what’s the wait time for Pirates???

Coming from the UK, we really are no use to anyone on arrival day 🤣 We’ve started staying at the airport hotel on the first day, then we’re fresh and raring to go the day after. Works really well for us ☺️

we drive which gives us added flexibility

we try to arrive as early as possible the first day - check in - then head out to a park or whatever... or we try to arrive at a time that we know going right to our room is likely... hate having to sit around in a lobby I don't find it relaxing to sit by the pool or in the lobby just waiting for my room

I usually have a very early flight. AP holder so it does not matter if I go into a park or not. Definitely tired and exhausted. What I have started doing is have my bathing suit handy and spend some time at the pool until the room is ready. It just becomes a pool day. Once I get the text room ready, I like to unpack/get settled in (when it works out/I have had to go to the desk to check on it and find out it's ready before text). It is never a late night since I am usually up since 3 am. I might run to a park late early evening. Trip is never less than 6/7 nights and don't feel the need to rush to go a park - but I have gone on arrival day also. The only time we stayed elsewhere the first night is if we drove straight through and needed a room for the night. That could be offsite or onsite. Not heavy park trips anymore unless I go with one of my adult kids/grandchildren.

We stopped trying to make “arrival day” a thing… and it changed everything. Our move now is simple: arrive late, start strong.

We traditionally take an evening flight, usually landing around 8–9 PM from PVD. That means:

✈️ We still get a full workday in
🎒 My daughter gets a normal school day
💸 No wasted PTO, no rushed packing chaos

By the time we land, we’re not frazzled… just ready.

Uber to the resort, quick and easy. No waiting, no extra stops. Meanwhile, Instacart has already done its job and is sitting with bell services 🛒

We grab it, head to the room, and shift into “arrival mode”:

Unpack, Get organized, Set up snacks, drinks, coffee for the morning

If timing works out, maybe we catch fireworks from the resort… if not, no stress. That’s not the point of the night.

The goal is simple, remove friction from tomorrow Because the next morning? We wake up rested, fully set up, and fully in vacation rhythm.

No grocery runs, No scrambling, No “what do we do now”

Just a clean decision execution:
🎢 Park (we like rope drop)
🏝️ Pool
…or both

It’s not flashy, but it’s efficient. And it turns arrival day from a half wasted expense into a strategic setup for everything that follows.

Arrival day doesn’t need to be magical.
It just needs to make the next day better.

My favorite arrival strategy is getting there mid to late afternoon. If we are flying (Southwest from BWI) it means we are not getting crazy early for a morning flight. If we are driving it means staying at DVC Hilton Head the night before.

Either way, getting there mid to late afternoon allows us to unpack, get settled, go to the store if we are doing that, and have a nice dinner. Nowhere fancy - Geyser Point if we are staying at BR, Turf Club Lounge if we are staying at SSR, or Bar Riva if we are staying at Riviera (just throwing those out as examples).

I am completely incapable of staying awake on a plane so I leave NY on the earliest flight, nap, and get to the resort around 10 AM. I pack my carry on for the pool and go straight there. Once I get my room I drop off my stuff then go out, pick up whatever food I want in the room, then go to dinner. I'm usually wiped out by 8 or 9, so I can get an early start the next morning.

We do an arrival "day" resort, and just like you said, we'll either do SS or a cash stay at POR French Quarter (because of the beignets). We drive in from Georgia, so we'll leave right after school and head down. Most of the time we'll arrive by 10PM or 11PM. Enough time to get a decent nights rest and hit a park the next day.

We'll pack a separate bag just for that stay so we don't have to lug everything in for one night.

I too am very curious if members that fly in late use their points for that night or find another hotel, resort, etc. to stay at that first night (pay cash) and save the points. We have a stay coming up in mid May at the RIV before a cruise and land at 10pm. I thinking it doesn't make sense to spend the 20 points for the 1BR that night. Does anyone else do the same?

I guess it depends but if you are paying cash for someplace you then have to switch rooms which can be a pain. Back in the days of the Magical Express I always liked the idea of flying in late, getting a hotel near the airport that has a free shuttle and free breakfast (like the Hampton Inn) and the next morning taking the free shuttle back to airport and taking the ME to WDW but we never actually did that.

Yes DVC Dan, the switching of rooms is definitely a big pain for my wife. She hates it, even to the point of not wanting to do split stays. I'm not as opposed to it, especially for a short stay like this where we'll only have one piece of luggage each, but that is definitely at the top of the discussion.

Ah, we are in similar situations and when I have pitched a similar strategy to my wife, beyond the switching of rooms bit her reply is usually along the lines of, "We bought the points so we don't have to pay for rooms."

It's funny because I have done the complete opposite and used points for a one night stay before switching to Universal. I think it was 3 weeks before and a studio opened up so I changed my flight and had a water park day. There's something irresistible about squeezing in just a few hours, even if it isn't supposed to be a Disney trip.

for us, with kids, split stays are too much work.

I like @AstroBlasters idea of just getting 2 rooms for the transition day... but I am too much of a points miser, and don't have enough points to want to do that...

even then, I would need a probably 10-11 night stay at a minimum to want to do it.. likely would be alternating between boardwalk area and monorail...

We live in the PNW at the moment and have found our favorite way to star our trips is to red eye in. Sleep as much as we can on the flight and land around 7-8am so we end up going into the park and have a slow day starting there before going to a resort for a snack or grabbing lunch at a quick service. get into the room take a quick nap and have a lazy evening.

I am having to force myself to think of the points as “just points” and not “what is the rental value of the points I am using to do this”.

I think we would all prefer to stay in just one resort…. but the issue is that Crescent Lake resorts & Bay Lake resorts are completely different and we don’t want to give up half of what we like about the trip..

No getting Gaspirilla Grill for the boys while we go to Wailulu or Citricos for date night?

No Boardwalk Pizza dinner in the room for the boys while we get avocado margaritas at Le Cava del Tequila?

It’s just wouldn’t be what we’ve come to love about a WDW trip….. so I just had to buy more points and pay more dues and consider it the cost of what we want a WDW trip to be.

We have always taken an early flight or at leave before noon. We try to typically go to Epcot for dinner. Since Covid we have started eating dinner at Chefs de France. My girls love the food and it is close to BWV so we can go back afterwards for an early night. We typically go for 7 nights, so adding an extra day on the tickets is minimal cost.

I’m exhausted after traveling typically so I don’t make any plans. I do enjoy a few adult bevs and some easy dinner on my balcony! If my room isn’t ready I have bell service hold my things and might sit by the pool for adult bevs and food.

I drive, it is about 8 hours. My room is always ready when i arrive. I usually make dinner plans somewhere on property with local friends. I end the night with an adult beverage, and early to bed to be ready for early entry. My home resort is BCV, so sometimes (when using an annual pass and staying at BCV ) I can take a quick exploration into Epcot.

Have fun, and "See Ya Real Soon!"

I remember the long travel days before moving local and I'd never schedule anything day of arrival because delays are inevitible. Quick meal and straight to bed to get ready bright and early the next morning.

We like to do split stays where we spend 1 or 2 nights at a resort close to springs with lower point cost (SS or OKW). This way no matter when our flight arrives or if we are driving and get in later than expected we can relax at a calmer less crowded resort and do some shopping if we feel up to it. We usually pack what we need that first night in our carryon so we're not unpacking everything. We like the resort mugs (use them as souvenirs and a little reminder of Disney when we're home). We don't do them every trip but we realized on a trip a few years ago that if we did a 1 night stay we could book the dining plan for that 1 night and our mugs would still be good the rest of our stay since they're good for 14 days even if purchased on a dining plan. We priced it and it made sense to do it since we could definitely do 2 quick service meals and a snack within check-in day and check-out day especially some of those higher cost quick service options at disney springs.

On our most recent trip we arrived at 4pm and didn’t run off to a park. Instead we had a nice dinner at GF Cafe. It was so much more relaxing and we were fresh and ready to go the next day.

When trying to save points we have taken to an airport hotel the night before we go home. The last day is usually a long park day anyways, so we load up and then stay in the parks as long as possible before heading to the airport hotel. That end of trip point savings is nice.
